What to do at this stage
- Confirm you need to register. Self employed over £1,000, a landlord, or with other untaxed income.
- Register online. Through HMRC, choosing the self employed route or form SA1 if you are not self employed.
- Get your UTR. It arrives by post within about 10 working days, followed by an activation code.
- Start record keeping. Begin tracking income and expenses now, so the return is quick when it is due.

Frequently asked questions
When should I register for Self Assessment?
By 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you started earning untaxed income. Registering early avoids missing the January filing deadline, as the UTR comes by post.
How do I register?
Online with HMRC, using the self employed route if you are self employed, or form SA1 if you are, for example, a landlord. HMRC then posts your UTR and an activation code.
What do I need to register?
Your name, address, National Insurance number and the date you started. HMRC uses these to set up your Self Assessment record.
How long does it take?
Expect around 10 working days for your UTR, then a little longer for the activation code, so allow two to three weeks before you can file.
What if I am not sure I need to register?
It is worth a quick check rather than a guess, because filing late brings penalties. We can confirm your position in minutes and register you if needed.
