Where to find your UTR
- On HMRC letters. It appears on your tax return, statements and most correspondence from HMRC.
- In your Personal Tax Account or the HMRC app, under your Self Assessment details.
- On a payment reference. Your Self Assessment payment reference is your UTR followed by the letter K.
How to get one, and lost UTRs
You get a UTR by registering for Self Assessment, after which HMRC posts it within about 10 working days. If you have lost yours, you can find it in your online account or the app, or ask HMRC. A company also has its own separate UTR for corporation tax.

Frequently asked questions
What is a UTR number?
A Unique Taxpayer Reference is a 10 digit number HMRC uses to identify you for Self Assessment. You need it to file your return, pay your tax and contact HMRC about your tax.
How do I get a UTR?
You get one automatically when you register for Self Assessment. HMRC then posts it to you within about 10 working days.
Where can I find my UTR?
On HMRC letters and your tax return, and in your Personal Tax Account or the HMRC app under your Self Assessment details.
What if I lose my UTR?
You can find it again in your online account or the HMRC app, or contact HMRC. It never changes, so once found you can reuse it each year.
Does a company have a UTR?
Yes. A limited company has its own separate UTR for corporation tax, which is different from your personal Self Assessment UTR.
